A few years ago, getting paid media right meant picking placements, setting audiences and watching the dials every day. That job has mostly moved inside the platforms. Meta, TikTok and YouTube now run their own algorithms, and those algorithms decide who sees your ads.
That changes where the leverage is. When you can't really choose who sees the ad, the ad itself becomes the thing you control. Creative is now the biggest lever a brand has.

How the algorithm uses your creative
Here's what happens when you upload ads today. The platform takes everything you give it, runs it past different people, and watches how they respond. Whatever people actually react to, it serves more. Whatever they skip, it quietly stops showing.
So the more useful options you give it, the better it can find what works. That means:
- Different hooks. The hook is the first few seconds of an ad. It decides whether anyone sticks around for the rest.
- Different aspect ratios. Vertical, square and widescreen all fit different placements.
- Different lengths. A six-second cut and a thirty-second cut do different jobs.
You're not choosing the winner anymore. You're giving the algorithm good options and letting the audience vote.

What this means for media agencies
The old model was simple: a media agency handled the placements and monitored them. Now the algorithm does a lot of the driving and the optimization. So the question isn't whether you need a media agency. It's when.
The answer mostly comes down to how much you're spending.
As a rule of thumb, if you're spending $1 million to $10 million on media, you shouldn't blindly trust AI to make the right calls. You want a team responsible for those decisions, and that team uses AI to inform what they do. That's real money, and it deserves real people watching it.
If you're a smaller brand trying to break into a market, it's different. You probably don't need a separate agency layered on top of the algorithm.
How we handle it at Super-Conscious
We usually work with smaller companies going to market, not brands with eight-figure media budgets. For those partners, we do the media buying ourselves. We know advertising, we know what's likely to work, and we know how to read the results. AI handles a lot of the placements.
Our own line is roughly $100,000 to $200,000 in media spend. Past that, we bring in a specialist to make sure it's done right. Below it, we keep it in-house.
Each week the work is simple: [what does the team look at, cut and make next each week?]
Where this is going
Media is going to keep getting more automated. The brands that win won't be the ones with the cleverest targeting settings. They'll be the ones feeding the algorithm a steady stream of good creative, built on a clear idea, and paying attention to what the results are telling them.
