How much does product design cost?

A focused product design engagement typically runs $40,000–$150,000 depending on scope and duration. That range covers a 6–8 week sprint to design a core user flow at the low end, and a 4–6 month engagement covering research, full product design, and a design system at the high end.

What drives the cost

Scope and duration are the primary drivers. Designing one flow for one user type is a smaller engagement than designing an entire product for three user types with different permissions and goals. Research depth matters too: engagements that include user interviews, usability testing, and synthesis cost more than those where the product team has already defined the problem.

What you get at each level

At $40,000–$60,000: a focused sprint covering 1–2 core user flows, delivered in 6–8 weeks. Right for companies that have a specific problem to solve and a clear brief.

At $60,000–$100,000: full product design engagement covering research, flows, visual design, and a component library. 10–16 weeks. Right for companies building or redesigning a core product.

At $100,000–$150,000: extended engagement with deeper research, complex product architecture, and a full design system. Right for products with multiple user types, complex workflows, or enterprise requirements.

Build or hire?

A senior product designer runs $130,000–$180,000 per year. For a contained engagement, a studio is more cost-efficient. For ongoing product development, an in-house designer who knows the product deeply makes more sense. Many companies work with a studio for the initial build and hire internally once the product is established.
